Beyond The Blue Yonder

Today I payed a visit to my dear grandmother who had recently turned 106 and still quite sharp in her old age. We talked over some tea and scones about life in general past and present. I asked about my dear old grandfather who had died long before I was born she told me he was an inventor, and had dreams of crossing the Atlantic ocean in a plane that he himself had built many years ago. I at the risk of digging up hurtful memories asked what had happened to my grandfather. My grandmother put down her tea cup stood up from her chair, and said follow me Mikka I have something to show you. I followed my dear old grandmother upstairs and into her bedroom where I observed an old and dusty chest sitting in the middle of the room. I walked over slowly to this old chest, and knelt down in front of it................

Tugging, and pulling at the lid it finally began to give way and slowly it opened. As a small cloud of dust finally settled I began to peek inside ruffling through bits of old newspaper clippings. I sitting right at the bottom of the chest was an envelope with no label. I removed the dusty old envelope from the chest and went back down stairs with my grandmother. Inside the envelope were three photographs faded and scratched, and ever so slightly torn around the edges...............

Looking at the first photograph. I turned to my grandmother who wiping a tear away from her eye asked do you know who these two people are in the photograph Mikka? I looked at my grandmother and said that looks like you grandmother, but who is that tall man you are embracing he looks remarkably like me? She began to wipe more tears away from her tired eyes. That man you see before you in the picture my dear Mikka is your grandfather he disappeared 86 years ago to this day during a bad snow storm.............

Looking closely at the old, and faded photograph as my grandmother began to recount the happy times they spent together before my grandfathers tragic disappearance. I couldn't help but notice the resemblance I bore to my grandfather was quite uncanny....almost as though we were twins separated by the barricades of time. My grandmother told me that I am a lot like my grandfather was in both appearance and personality. It was like I was sort of like looking at myself living in the past such an eerie feeling had come over me...........

As I kissed my grandmother goodbye, and thanked her for the warm tea and scones. I couldn't help but wonder what if my grandfather had lived, and not attempted his fateful flight amid the closing in of a terrible snow storm. I started to wish that I too were an inventor and could have invented a time machine to go back, and save my grandfathers life. As I got into my car and drove home from my grandmothers house I thought to myself maybe, just maybe one day. I will make a name for myself and be the first man to travel through time but for now. I will take solace in knowing that wherever my grandfather may have disappeared to at least he followed his dreams, and I will follow mine in hopes that one day they will indeed come true.........
